I went a unique coffee shop “Kominka Cafe Rengetsu ( 古民家カフェ蓮月)” by Ikegami Honmonji Temple!!
What is Kominka (古民家) Cafe?
“Kominka” can be divided two words.
Ko (古) means “old”.
Minka (民家) means “a house where generally middle class people live”
So, Kominka means “Old House”.
Kominka Cafe is “(Japanese) Old House Coffee Shop” in English. Recently, this kind of places using an old Japanese building has been increasing. I think they are pretty cool because I can enjoy “Past” and “Present” at the places.
Rengetsu is a coffee shop renovated an 1920’s or 1930’s Japanese house (According to Rengetsu Website, it was built early Showa era). It was a Soba (buckwheat noodle) shop before becoming the coffee shop.

How was it?
I am not familiar with Japanese old house because the environment I grew up had no typical and traditional Japanese houses having a sliding door sticked paper called Shoji (障子), an inside space called Doma (土間) where people can walk in shoes, etc. So, I didn’t feel any nostalgia. But I got excited because I was in the place where I only can see TV shows!! It is as if a time travel!!

Each interia good make one harmony by drawing each attraction.
We ( I and my friend) ordered lunch. I chose curry and rice. They were good.

My friend who took me there chose Buta Don (Grilled Pork Bowl). The Pork was very thick!!

I also ordered a cup of coffee after lunch. It was also great.

And the milk was “real” milk ( in Japan, shops offering real milk for coffee or tea are super rare) . Moreover, surprisingly, it was hot milk!!
OMG! It was impressing!
We stayed at the shop long time, but many people came and went. It seems to be popular.

I wanna eat cake when I visit Honmonji temple next time.
Let’s go to “Rengetsu” when you visit Honmonji Temple!!
