Get Japanese Experience! Summer Zen Retreat in Soto Zen Buddhism Sojiji Head Monastery ! Part 1

About a couple of monthes ago, I joined Zen Workishop in Soto Zen Buddhism Sojiji  Head Monastery in Tsurumi, Yokohama.  However, I couldn’t stand the sore on my ankles and concentrate Zen itself.

I just understood ” Oh, Zen is painful.”  instead of what Zen is.

This is my last article→Zen Workshop (Zen Experience) in Soto Zen Buddism Sojiji Head Monastery

How shameful!

In this August, Sojiji Temple ran a Zen retreat program offering physical Zen training and classroom-lectures for three days two nights. So, I joined it!!

Application

You can join a Zen workshop which I introduce before without an application however, the retreat requires an application.

I was going to apply for it by a phone but they only accept by a reply-paid card (The Japanese name is oufuku-hagaki (往復ハガキ)) .  So, I dared to buy it to apply for it.

(Actually, it was my 1st time to write a reply-paid card. I refer the following website.

http://www.nengasyotyuu.com/mamechishiki/reply_paid/ (Japanese Only)

I am sorry, I couldn’t find how to write a reply-paid card in English…)

In the reply-paid card, you need write

  • First name and Family name
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Address
  • Phone No.
  • Job
  • Allergies (If you have)

After a few weeks, I received the following post card.

Let’s go for the retreat!!

Reception

I arrived at this reception in earlier time than the scheduled time.  Completely, it is different from the last time Zen workshop ( I deeply reflected the last time fail). So, I never ran at this time, but I sweated very much in this time too. The day was too humid.

The number of participant is around 35, 36 or so?

I was surprised since the number was beyond my expectation ( I knew the capacity was up to 50 participants during the retreat). The gender ratio was about male 60% and female 40 %.

I guessed the average age of the participants was around 30’s before going, but actual participants seemed to be older than 30’s.  Some of them seem to take part in this retreat every year.  Probably, I was the youngest person with the least knowledge of Soto Zen.  Each 7 or 8 participants stay in a room.

Let’s change the clothes and go for Zen training!!

Trainee monks lent clothes for Zen training. The partipants can wear them during the retreat if they want.

Tomorrow, I will post what the contents are!
