General Knowledge in Japan: A Japanese, Famous Mystery Writer You Should Know ~Ranpo Edogawa~

Who is “Edogawa Ranpo (江戸川乱歩)”?

To be honest with you, I wavered whether” General Knowledge” or “Trivia” in the title. But Edogawa Ranpo is pretty famous in Japan, so, I decided to use “general knowledge”.

If you love Japan and mystery fictions, you definitely should know the writer, Edogawa  Ranpo(江戸川乱歩) who is the one of the most popular mystery writer in Japan.

His works affected later Japanese mystery novel, manga and others. He is so famous as almost all Japanese know his name even if he/she is not his fan.

For example, there is Edogawa Ranpo Award in Japan.  It is well known as a gateway to success for being a mystery writer.  And  “Conan Edogawa” who is a protagonist  of “Case Closed” (Japanese name: 名探偵コナン (Meitantei Conan),a pretty famous anime in Japan, is named from Edogawa Ranpo ( Needless to say, “Conan” is from Arther Conan Doyle).

What did he write?

The best way to know how his work is, of course, reading.

On the other hand, the best way to know his biography is wikipedia, but to stimulate your curiosity, I will briefly write about his work.

As I mentioned above, Edogawa Ranpo is a pretty famous writer in Japan.  His name “Edogawa Ranpo” is named from an American writer “Edgar Allan Poe” who wrote “The Black Cat” “The Gold  Bug”, etc.

(FYI:”Edgar Allan Poe” is written “エドガー・アラン・ポー”(E Do Ga A / A Ra N Po O) in Japanese. On the other hand, Edogawa Ranpo is written  “江戸川乱歩”(エドガワ・ランポ E Do Ga Wa / Ra N Po).  They have similar sounds in terms of Japanese sounds.)

Ranpo is famous as the author of  ” Detective Kogoro Akechi Series(名探偵明智小五郎シリーズ)”, “The Human Chair (人間椅子)”, ” The Fiend with Twenty Faces (怪人二十面相)”, etc.

His expressions are likely to be erotic and grotesque except for juvenile literature (“The Fiend with Twenty Faces” were written as a juvenile literature, so, the expression is not so extreme ). The aesthetic literature expression attracts his fans a lot 😛

There is his ex-residence in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.

Ranpo passed away in 1965, but his last residence is still in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. He had collected and left a lot of books in his storehouse. So, the residence is  very precious as a place not only having Ranpo’s articles, but also having a lot of historical books.

Nowadays,it is used as The Edogawa Rampo Memorial Center for Popular Culture Studies belonging to Rikkyo University (English Name: Saint Paul University).  It opens to the public every Wednesday and Friday (Except National Holidays) from 10am to 4pm.
